Now an inland people, the Baining live in the mountainous of the same name. They are believed to be descended from the original inhabitants of the Gazelle Peninsula of East New Britain in Papua New Guinea. In their culture, the traditional necklace is thick with layers of white and brown Snakehead Cowry shells. The Baining Necklace is a beautiful way to display the artistry of this tribal community.
